Elijah Dukes suspended for being 5 minutes late from Little-League event

An hilarious story from the most ridiculous organization in all of professional sports - the Washington Nationals.

The team benched outfielder Elijah Dukes on Sunday. They also fined him $500 and threatened to demote him to AAA. Why were the Nats so willing to throw Dukes under a bus?

Was it drug posession? A late night with a hooker? Better yet, dog fighting.

The correct answer would be none of the above.

Elijah Dukes, the only player to do anything at all for the Nats this season while he bats in the .300s with 2 homeruns and 8 RBI, was benched for showing up 5 minutes late to the stadium.

Ohh, I bet you are thinking this is where it gets good. Your imagination rattles off possible scenarios of why this one-time baseball "bad boy" was late.

Did he hit a child and leave him/her for dead? Get a speeding ticket driving recklessly? Or how about he was busy threatening his wife and children?

None of the above.

Elijah Dukes was doing charity work at a local little-league event, and apologized immediately for his actions. He didn't hide, he didn't make excuses. He owned up. The one-time reject is working to fix his old ways with good deeds and he still gets the whip.

Needing the explain his rather harsh decision, Manny Acta tried to redeem himself to the Washington Post.

"He was late for work, he broke a team rule, and we are going to change the culture here — regardless of how well a guy is playing. And it was a bizarre situation, because he was doing something that we encourage our players to do: He was out in the community doing something for some Little League program and just showed up late to work.
